24 Advent Haiku Poems for Christmas

-

wise men still seek Him
believing to understand
love blossoms to life

no mere fairytale 
for this genealogy 
runs back through all time 

this story starts where 
many stories get there start 
love, but immortal

a few hundred years 
awaiting God's next big move 
He visits a teen

boy meets girl, in love
yet there's a classic plot twist
this love's a faith leap

something has happened 
O Mary what have you done 
ponder in your heart

fear ... 'fear not! fear not!'
there must've been some real fright 
so many questions 

have you heard the news 
the stars' configuration 
let the quest begin

angel wings choir sings
shepherds and their flocks by night
lit by guiding star

poor but rich in heart
shepherds especially blessed
great is their reward 

stars, sheep, cows, angels
creation calls Creator 
baby King in manger

from far away lands
we have come to worship Him 
words fail to express

the small toddler coos 
inquisitive hands at play 
gold, frankincense, myrh

awake world in dark
from slumber to a new dawn
the babe Christ the King

Harrod, man of hate 
murderous paranoia 
flight into Egypt

John the Baptizer
a guide to the path of peace
pointing to the truth

light breaks upon us 
prepare the way of the Lord 
all people shall see

Emanuel come
weren't our hearts burning 
reveal now your truth 

a carpenter's son 
working wood, planing, shaping
the old rugged cross

don't forget the gifts
but recall the greatest gift 
the gift of God's love

there's a giant "why"
for my Christmas holiday
"why" must be lived out

on this special day 
all together with loved ones
hearts as one in love

light the Christmas tree
light the houses row on row
light warming our hearts

this special season
remembering the reason
Christ, Light of the world

A Very "MERRY" Christmas!

As the holiday season comes upon us, there is much exuberance in our household of 5 kids. I'd like to harness that energy somehow and share it, maybe hook them up to a generator and ... a treadmill to power the house? I'm not too far from actually considering it - they'd love it probably. With the push and pull of holiday bustle, I may not have a solution to all your energy needs, but I feel that there is a power to heartfelt laughter, not just bc. my kids bound around howling happily, but bc. I feel it in my own rather burdened life ... being able to laugh in the midst of it is somehow freeing. The taught ropes of tension seem to drop away, or at least slacken for a breather. The gift of joy. May it be yours. A Blue Christmas?

"As soon as I saw it I knew I had to write this." My wife and I used to perform this song for Christmas parties, me doing my worst Elvis impersonation and Joy doing her doo-wops. In retrospect, I don’t know if I could sing that song at this stage of my life with the same hilarity. Some times in life are very blue. I for one don’t believe in flukey coincidence; too often in my life things co-incide (Latin: ‘fall in together’) with a real connection I only sometimes later see -- like dominos triggering a series or pattern.  I was given my favorite coffee-caramel candy at a Christmas party and today I went to stash some of it inside my leather motorbike jacket which was hung away until the riding season.
