100 Winter Nights - A Poem

(Warning: This stunning video from space might just make you emotional.) I’ve felt inspired this winter to write the following verse. Proud to be Canadian. 🇨🇦 


100 Winter Midnights


One hundred nights 

In the true north 

Light

Oh, come set me free


Aurora sweep over my horizon 

Borealis necklace around our sleepy planet 

Firelight flickering 

Flare 

From parent star 


Beacon in seeming endless dark

A message on the winds to remind us 

How small we are 

Yet 

Part of something grand and beautifully alive


A swirling dance to celebrate  

Ruach 

Breath of life

around this singular blue marble


Cosmic rainbow 

Promising hope in the grand mystery 

Stop, look up and

Remember

You are not alone

A Very "MERRY" Christmas!

As the holiday season comes upon us, there is much exuberance in our household of 5 kids. I'd like to harness that energy somehow and share it, maybe hook them up to a generator and ... a treadmill to power the house? I'm not too far from actually considering it - they'd love it probably. With the push and pull of holiday bustle, I may not have a solution to all your energy needs, but I feel that there is a power to heartfelt laughter, not just bc. my kids bound around howling happily, but bc. I feel it in my own rather burdened life ... being able to laugh in the midst of it is somehow freeing. The taught ropes of tension seem to drop away, or at least slacken for a breather. The gift of joy. May it be yours. A Blue Christmas?

"As soon as I saw it I knew I had to write this." My wife and I used to perform this song for Christmas parties, me doing my worst Elvis impersonation and Joy doing her doo-wops. In retrospect, I don’t know if I could sing that song at this stage of my life with the same hilarity. Some times in life are very blue. I for one don’t believe in flukey coincidence; too often in my life things co-incide (Latin: ‘fall in together’) with a real connection I only sometimes later see -- like dominos triggering a series or pattern.  I was given my favorite coffee-caramel candy at a Christmas party and today I went to stash some of it inside my leather motorbike jacket which was hung away until the riding season. Inside a zipper pocket I never knew was there before, I felt some paper.
